Tacoma Flex

Take up to two classes online with Tacoma Flex, while continuing in-person courses

High school students can take up to two courses a day online at the start or end of the school day, while continuing the remainder of their classes in-person. This give students schedule flexibility and/or provides the opportunity to take a course that may not be offered in-person at their high school.

Tacoma Flex is also offered to middle school students, interested families should contact their school counselor.

Courses are offered through Tacoma Online and taught by Tacoma teachers. Students interested in Tacoma Flex are encouraged to explore course offerings and talk with their family, parental consent is required.

Complete the Tacoma Flex high school course request form. The information you provide will be sent to your school counselor for evaluation and scheduling. Students will receive email updates to their TPS email account.

Tacoma Flex can be a good fit for students with jobs, family commitments, or those seeking a more adaptable schedule.

Flexibility to take courses not otherwise available.
Later start time for in-person classes if students take Tacoma Flex courses in the morning.
Earlier in-person release time for in-person classes if students take Tacoma Flex courses in the afternoon.

Note:

Parental consent is required.
School bus transportation isn't available for FLEX participants, but ORCA cards for public transit will be provided.

Responsibilities with Tacoma Flex

Tacoma Flex courses are part of an Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) and come with some additional responsibilities:

Weekly Communication: Stay connected with Tacoma Flex staff through a combination of emails and Microsoft Forms. This is a state requirement, and missing communications can result in removal from the program.
Adequate Monthly Progress: Maintain passing grades (D or above, 60%) to remain in the program. Falling behind may require extra help from teachers or, ultimately, removal from Flex.

A note about AP courses
Please note that all Flex AP students will take the AP exam in May through the Flex program and not at their home school. Students wanting to take AP courses through Flex should enroll in the full year through Flex. Students will only be able to transfer an AP course to Flex mid-year if they earned a C or better in the A section of the course at their in-person school.

Course offerings include English Language Arts, Mathematics, World Languages, Social Studies, Sciences, Career & Technical Education and Electives. Explore the high school course catalog to see all current offerings.
