Former Foss Falcon Tom Burmester in WIAA Hall of Fame

Tom Burmester's name has become synonymous with excellence, dedication and visionary leadership in high school athletics.

Burmester served for many years as a math teacher, athletic director and ASB Administrator at Foss High School — a role that demanded not only organizational finesse but also an unwavering commitment to students and school spirit.

This week, Burmester was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), the governing body of middle and high school athletics.

“Tom understood the importance of activities and athletics to kids in relation to their academic success,” said Jen Kubista, former athletic director for Tacoma Public Schools. “He was really good for kids - he worked hard for kids, and he loved showcasing Foss.”

Bonnie McGuire, former Foss High School principal, saw students that sought Burmester our as a teacher for his manner and ability.

“He was pretend gruff. He was loved and admired, respected as a teacher,” she said. “They wanted him as a dad and grandfather model.”

Burmester’s impact extended far beyond the walls of Foss. For nearly three decades, he played a central role in shaping the landscape of high school baseball in Washington. Beginning in 1995, he served as a regional and state tournament manager for WIAA, overseeing logistics and ensuring top-tier experiences for student-athletes, coaches and fans. His work behind the scenes culminated in a key leadership role starting in 2006, when the 3A and 4A state baseball championships were moved to Safeco Field in Seattle. Burmester was instrumental in this transition, working countless hours and covering countless miles throughout the iconic venue to ensure everything ran seamlessly.

Those who’ve worked alongside Burmester, especially in these high-pressure tournament settings, speak of his calm demeanor, efficiency, and a contagious positivity that could defuse the most stressful situations. Whether addressing a concern from a coach, collaborating with facility staff, or guiding volunteers, Burmester always led with integrity and a smile.

Even after retirement, Burmester continues to give back. He remains active in mentoring athletic directors and regularly supports WIAA events across the state—proving that his commitment to student athletics is not tied to a title, but rather a lifelong calling.

Burmester's induction into the WIAA Hall of Fame reflects a legacy built on decades of service, leadership and heartfelt dedication.

And while he had an impressive role in the state and graduated from Mount Tahoma High School, Burmester is Foss all the way.

“He loves Foss,” said Thu Ament, another former Foss principal. “He bleeds green and gold.”

Even after all these years, the self-described “baseball junkie” remains modest about his accomplishments and impact on students.

“I’m sure I got more out of it than I gave,” he said.
